New York City, New York Jun 9, 2025 (Issuewire.com) - The University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and John R. Oishei Childrens Hospital are proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Shahzad B. Waheed, MD, FRCPC, MBA, as Chief of the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Waheed, a seasoned pediatric intensivist with over 25 years of clinical and academic experience, will lead the division in delivering cutting-edge care to critically ill children across Western New York.
Dr. Waheed earned his medical degree from Dow Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan, and completed residencies in pediatrics at Cooper University Hospital and in pediatric critical care medicine at Vancouver General Hospital/University of British Columbia. He further honed his expertise through a fellowship at the University of Alberta Hospital. Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in both general pediatrics and pediatric critical care medicine, Dr. Waheed also holds a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) and an MBA, underscoring his commitment to both clinical excellence and healthcare leadership.
In his new role, Dr. Waheed will oversee the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Oishei Childrens Hospital, a state-of-the-art facility with 185 inpatient beds and a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center. The hospital, affiliated with the Kaleida Health System and the University at Buffalo, serves as a critical hub for pediatric care in the region. Dr. Waheed's leadership is expected to enhance the hospital's capabilities in managing complex pediatric cases and advancing critical care protocols. Dr. Waheed has been collaborating with Oishei Childrens Hospital to establish a Pediatric Sedation Program, providing easier access for patients who require diagnostic or minor surgical procedures to be performed under sedation.
Beyond his clinical duties, Dr. Waheed is an active researcher and educator. His recent publications include studies on topical pharyngeal anesthesia in sedated pediatric patients undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy and practice variability in screening and treating pediatric critical illness delirium. Dr. Waheed helped develop an in-situ simulation program for pediatric residency to train future pediatricians. As a Clinical Associate Professor at the University at Buffalo, he is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of pediatricians and intensivists, fostering a culture of inquiry and continuous improvement.
Dr. Waheed's appointment marks a significant step forward in the institution's shared mission to provide exceptional pediatric care and to lead in medical education and research. His international training and comprehensive experience position him uniquely to bridge global best practices with local healthcare needs. The University at Buffalo and Oishei Childrens Hospital welcome Dr. Waheed and look forward to the advancements his leadership will bring to pediatric critical care in the community.
